Oh, no, how? Why? But...? My mind was quickly swarmed with different thoughts as fears took over logic. I couldn’t focus on one idea. How was that possible? Was I dreaming or were my eyes playing tricks on me? How could that happen? I tried to slam the door shut, but he put his foot in the way.
“You aren’t happy to see me?” Marco said as he pushed his way through the door slamming it behind him.
When he pushed me back, I fell to the ground. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Marco? “Why is it so hard to believe?” he said as he locked the door.
“Mama, are you ok?” Allen said coming into the room.
“Yes, baby I’m fine. Go back into the room with your brother.” I said, but Marco grabbed him and pushed him over by me. “Marco, look my kids have nothing to do with this. Please, I beg you to let them leave.”
Marco smirked then walked over to grab me by my throat, lifting me off the ground. Allen jumped up punching him. Marco smacked Allen flinging him across the room. I kicked Marco in his family jewels then grabbed a glass statue from a table, and swung it as hard as I could. It hit him the center of his face. Marco moaned in pain, massaging his head, backing away from me slowly. I grabbed Allen then ran to the back room where Jason was. I locked the door then checked Allen out to make sure he was ok. I searched the room for a phone, but there wasn’t any, plus my cellphone was in the living room.
BAM! BAM! BAM!
Marco started beating on the door trying to knock it down. So, Allen and I pushed the dresser in front of the door.
POW! POW!
I felt my heart drop as we heard a gun go off. I was frozen in place until I listened to my kids screaming. I yelled for them to get under the bed. I opened the window to scream for help. My view from the window was minimum, so I wasn't sure if any could hear my pleas. What do I do? There was nowhere for us to run, and that dresser wasn’t going to hold him off for much longer. “I’m going to kill you, then those little bastards. Mind as well open up, you only making it worse!” he yelled through the door while he continued trying to get in.
I looked around the room for something to help, “Damn you, Mike!” I yelled.
“Mommy is that daddy out there?” Jason asked with a face full of tears.
“Baby, no your father would never do anything to hurt you guys. Now get back under that bed,” I said trying to figure out how I was going to protect my kids.
I ran over to the heating vent to take the covering off. “Allen, do you have your Swiss Army knife on you?” I asked.
Allen slid it over to me. I quickly removed two of the four screws that held the vent in place. The dresser started moving, letting me know that I didn’t have time to remove the other two. I turned the vent down the rest of the way, struggling to make it big enough to allow my boys to enter. Finally, the vent bent far enough. “Boys come now!” I yelled.
“Listen to mommy, Allen you are the big brother, you have to get Jason out of here. You two keep going until you feel safe or you see someone who will help you. Please, please be careful because I don’t know where these vents will lead you.”
“But what about you?” Jason asked.
“Look, do as I say. Now go I’m coming right after you. You can do this. My two handsome, smart young men.” I said as I put them in the vent one by one.
I watched as they crawled away. I bent the vent back to its original form then put a chair in front of the vent. If I was to die, at least I knew that my kids would be safe
